Summer Program
The Summer Program at Hanbury serves as a platform for design agency and critical inquiry, where students engage in research, production, and project work across scales and markets, gaining direct experience through mentorship and shared learning.

The program offers three focused tracks, each providing a distinct path into contemporary practice.
Summer Scholar: Research Track
Design research and critical inquiry.
Through focused research, scholars develop investigative frameworks, conduct site and precedent studies, translate findings into conceptual work that informs design across the firm, and conclude the term with a research-informed final project.

Across all tracks, students participate in:
• Project collaboration and design critiques
• Mentorship with architects, designers, and planners
• Firm-wide learning sessions and lectures
• Site visits and field engagement
• Final presentations to peers and firm leadership
This structure ensures that while each scholar follows a focused path, the cohort remains connected through shared studio culture and collective inquiry.

Our Summer Scholars develop site-embedded design research that addresses real conditions in the built environment. Work is presented publicly and archived annually as part of the firm’s ongoing design discourse.
“It is an unparalleled opportunity to understand both the world of professional architectural practice and discover what area of practice you feel most connected to.”
Erik Pate | Summer Scholar 2025
“My favorite part was the trust and creative freedom we were given… having ownership made the work feel personal and deeply rewarding.”
Nina Accousti | Summer Scholar 2025

“Our Summer Scholar Program is one of the most meaningful ways we connect with emerging talent. It gives students the chance to experience our work, our culture, and the communities we’re part of.”
